Windows 10 Support Ending Next Month! Here’s What It Means For You

September 01, 2025

Important Notice: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Although your Windows 10 PC will continue to function beyond this date, Microsoft will cease providing critical services such as security patches and technical assistance that keep your system secure and stable.

Why Business Owners Should Act Now

  • Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your system becomes increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks, malware, and viruses. Protecting your valuable business data means upgrading to a supported Windows version is essential.
  • Software Compatibility Concerns: Many applications are optimized for the latest operating systems. After Windows 10 reaches end-of-life, you may experience reduced performance or incompatibility with essential software.
  • Regulatory Compliance Risks: Businesses handling sensitive data or subject to industry regulations must maintain up-to-date systems to avoid legal penalties. Running outdated software can jeopardize compliance and expose you to fines.

What Are Your Upgrade Options?

Microsoft recommends upgrading to the newest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 devices meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, and attempting an incompatible upgrade will trigger error messages.

If your device isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these alternatives:

  • Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
  • Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for continued protection
  • Switch to a Linux operating system as an alternative
  • Ignore the deadline and risk your business security (not recommended!)

Important: Always back up your data before making any changes to safeguard your files during the transition.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10

If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, you can purchase ESU from Microsoft to receive security updates for one additional year beyond the October 2025 deadline. Keep in mind, ESU is a temporary fix, not a permanent solution.

To register for ESU, you can either pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. Alternatively, there's a free option that requires enabling Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive. While OneDrive offers 5 GB free, additional storage may be needed for large amounts of data.

Don't delay—register for ESU before the October 14 cutoff to ensure continued protection.
